Understanding Aesthetics task:
Aesthetics is scientifically defined as the study of sensory values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. When analyzing a building, we begin by scanning its façade. This means that we will examine the front of the building and systematically identify the aesthetic elements that compose the overall design. The first things we notice about a building are elements that appeal directly to our senses: line, shape, texture, color, light/dark, and space.
Colour:
This photo uses the visual tool of rule of three. By using a strong, solid purple to draw the audience's eye and off-setting it with a lighter shade of purple as a second colour and patterned grey/black as an accent, in correlation to the black boots, not only offer variety and different things to look at, but because of this contrasting rule, ties the outfit together and balances it without it being too similar. |
Texture:
There are three different noticeable textures in this picture, which play a role in creating visual variety. The rough, colourful, scaly texture of the roof in contrast to the almost displaced smooth looking exterior of the house, and lastly, following the rule of three, the abstract, smooth textures of the balconies create irregularity and add depth to the picture, especially the juxtaposing house and roof, creating the mood of abstract designs. |
Space:
This photo obviously uses the visual technique of positive & negative space to create contrast and juxtapose the white and black colour scheme present. Therefore, due to the "overlapping" and close space, it creates both the image of a fork in which the audience sees, but because of negative space, bottles can also be seen, emphasising two points for the "food & wine festival". |
Shape:
The shapes in this picture are very rounded, suggesting the impression of youth and an inviting character. Had the shapes been angular, and too small, or in the shape of a triangle, the character would've seemed too scary, or too harsh which wasn't the intended purpose of this character. Therefore, the use of the circular shapes seem to convey safety, friendliness, and are appropriate for the audience. |
Space:
In this picture, the audience is immediately drawn to the black space in between the green background, the green juxtaposing with the black to create a focal point for the audience to focus at. In this case, the girl looks like she is dancing and enjoying herself, which therefore draws attention to the third component in this composition - the iPod. Against the black space, there is again more contrast of the white iPod. It is this technique of space which creates simply visual variety and success in commercial aesthetics. |
Line:
The use of the visual technique of lines in this picture creates irregularity. The curved, vertical lines, spiking up at the top enhance features of those like a spider, creating a scary illusion. As there are only three legs, the concept of the vertical lines suggest strength & power, as the top component is resting on top of these legs, overall creating a powerful and irregular design. |
